Rob Derks

Profile Rob Derks

Rob Derks was born on September 1, 1974, in Nijmegen, where he currently lives with his three children.

He is a Dutch comic artist and illustrator, known for his humorous drawings.

Childhood and Education

Growing up in Nijmegen, Rob initially followed a study to become an art teacher. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in drawing itself.

In 1999, he gained national recognition with his comic strip "Pakje Bakmeel," which was published in various newspapers, including the daily Metro. This comic strip humorously illustrates the adventures of a package of baking flour.

Career

In 2001, Rob founded his own comic studio “Studio Noodweer”, along with three other illustrators, which has since then grown to six illustrators. They work both individually and in collaboration on comics and illustrations.

Rob also designs beer labels for ‘Brouwerij D’n Brul’, entirely in his distinctive style. In addition to his work for Studio Jan van Haasteren, he has his own puzzle series called 'Pieces of History', where historical events are illustrated in an amusing and educational manner.

Studio Jan van Haasteren

Rob has been drawing for Studio Jan van Haasteren since 2013. His debut puzzle was 'Seafood Supper,' but 'Winterfair,' his second creation, was released first.

Rob’s style fits the characteristic look of Jan van Haasteren puzzles, while also adding his own flair and creativity.

Signature

Besides the regular family members, we also see recurring element in the puzzle illustrations made by Rob. For instance, there are always two men with long beards, inspired by the members of ZZ Top. Freddie Mercury, the letters AC/DC, and Elvis also make frequent appearances. A blue pen, a set of twins, and two fighting women are also often drawn into the images. For the observant puzzler, a painter and a chimney sweeper are also frequently included.
